Scope of application

Drop tube furnaces demonstrate unique value in materials science and extreme environment simulation. In space microgravity simulations, they are used for containerless solidification experiments of metal alloys or ceramics, avoiding crucible contamination and enabling investigation of deep supercooling. Drop Tube Furnace

The Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) is a special type of tubular furnace primarily used to study and simulate the rapid pyrolysis, combustion, and gasification of fuels (such as coal, biomass, and waste) at high temperatures. Its core feature is that fuel particles fall freely through a vertical heating tube, completing the reaction within an extremely short residence time. This design is particularly suitable for studying reaction kinetics at high temperatures and within short periods of time.

I. Operating Principle

The Drop Tube Furnace (DTF) consists of a high-temperature heating furnace body, vertical tubes, a fuel feed system, a gas flow control system, and sampling and exhaust systems.

The operating process is as follows:

Fuel Feeding

Fuel (powder or pellets) is uniformly fed into the top of the tubes via a screw feeder or pneumatic conveying system.

Particle Fall and Heating

The fuel falls freely along the vertical tubes under the influence of gravity.

Heating elements on the outside of the tubes generate high temperatures (typically 1000–1600°C), rapidly heating the particles through radiation and convection.

Fast Reaction

The residence time is typically 0.5–5 seconds, simulating the actual reaction time in an industrial burner or gasifier.

Product Collection and Analysis

Gaseous products enter a sampling and analysis system (e.g., gas chromatography (GC) or mass spectrometry (MS)) through the bottom outlet.

Solid residue is collected by a bottom collector for ash analysis, carbon conversion determination, and other purposes.

II. Structural Components

Furnace: Constructed of high-temperature insulating material and a metal shell, with a high-temperature furnace tube mounted vertically inside.

Heating System: Typically utilizes silicon carbide (SiC) or molybdenum disilicide (MoSi₂) heating elements, capable of temperatures up to 1600°C.

Furnace Tube: Typically quartz or corundum tube, with a diameter of 40–100 mm and a length of 1–2 m.

Feed System: Includes a fuel hopper, screw conveyor, and pneumatic conveying device.

Atmosphere Control: Air, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or mixed gases can be introduced to simulate combustion, gasification, inert atmospheres, and other conditions.

Sampling System: Equipped with high-speed valves, coolers, filters, and other components for precise capture of gaseous or solid samples.
