It is mainly used in experimental research on activated carbon: biomass (coconut shell, wood) or coal-based raw materials are carbonized under an inert atmosphere and then steam is introduced to activate the reaction.

Steam activation tube furnace
A steam activation tube furnace is essentially a tubular heating device designed for controlled high-temperature steam treatment of carbon-rich materials. Instead of just heating, it introduces superheated steam into the furnace to chemically and physically react with the carbon material, creating pores and increasing surface area.
It is commonly used in:
Activated carbon production
Biochar upgrading
Catalyst support activation
Gas adsorption material manufacturing
Laboratory R&D for porous carbon materials
2. How It Works
The process involves two main steps:
Heating Stage The carbonized material (e.g., coconut shell char, wood char, coal char) is loaded into the quartz or ceramic tube inside the furnace. The tube furnace heats the material—typically between 800°C and 1000°C—in an inert atmosphere (nitrogen or argon) to prevent unwanted oxidation.
Steam Activation Stage Once the target temperature is reached, steam is introduced into the tube. The steam reacts with carbon according to: C+H2O→CO+H2C + H_2O \rightarrow CO + H_2C+H2O→CO+H2 This reaction is endothermic, so continuous heating is required. The steam slowly erodes carbon atoms from the char surface, enlarging and creating micro-, meso-, and macropores, resulting in highly porous activated carbon.
3. Main Components
Heating Tube – Usually made of high-purity quartz, alumina, or stainless steel, depending on the process temperature and chemical resistance.
Heating Elements – Kanthal (FeCrAl) wires or SiC/MoSi₂ rods.
Steam Generator – Produces controlled amounts of superheated steam.
Gas Flow Control System – Controls steam, nitrogen, or argon flow rates.
Temperature Controller – PID system for precise temperature regulation.
Cooling System – For safe cooldown and protection of tube materials.
4. Advantages of Steam Activation Tube Furnaces
High Purity Process – Minimal contamination due to inert tube environment.
Uniform Heating – Ensures consistent pore development in all material batches.
Precise Steam Control – Adjustable steam flow for desired activation level.
Scalable Design – From small lab furnaces to industrial-scale systems.
